MDGs that nudge
World Bank chief economist Varun Gauri has argued that to
promote human development and reduce poverty, we need MDGs that
nudge in the right direction, with goals that are easier to grasp
for enthusiasts and non-experts.
His working paper, 'The Millennium Development Goals, Popular
Mobilization and the Post-2015 Development Framework', explains the
necessity for a revised MDG 2.0 framework that better captures the
attention of non-experts.
He says: "MDGs that are psychologically, morally, and politically
salient are more likely to change behavior. Terms like 'maternal
mortality ratio' and 'halve the proportion' and 'gender disparity'
simply do not have the moral resonance of terms like 'torture' or
'dissidents'."
