Turning talkinto action

The Girl Hub is a strategic collaboration between the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Nike Foundation. This partnership helps transform the lives of adolescent girls currently living in poverty by engaging the girls themselves as active participants.

What we do:

Girl Hub seeks to empower millions of adolescent girls. Drawing on the expertise of both DFID and Nike Foundation, we use a unique combination of expertise about and insights from adolescent girls, social communications, investment in innovative approaches and influencing to deliver results for girls at scale.

Rather than implementing large-scale service delivery programmes, Girl Hub delivers results for girls in a variety of ways. We have collected a database of knowledge and experience from working specifically with adolescent girls, and this data allows us to address a variety of needs and wants in order to supply them with the resources unique to their situation. We work with partners who have the same mission, and we use communication tools, brand leverage, innovative investments, inspirational messaging and effective calls to action by drawing on both DFID and Nike Foundation expertise.

Our plan is simple:
1. Bring girls' voices to the forefront and involving them in the design and implementation of policies that affect them.

2. Develop widespread social communications to inspire and engage girls, and shape how societies view and value them.

3. Inform and influencing decision makers to invest in effective policies and programmes that benefit girls.

Where we work

Since launching in 2010, Girl Hub has focused on delivering results in Rwanda, Nigeria and Ethiopia through family planning, getting direct assets to girls, building assets for girls in humanitarian settings, and research and data disaggregation.

What do DFID and Nike Foundation bring to Girl Hub?

Nike Foundation brings its expertise in adolescent girl programming, coupled with creative development excellence in brand marketing, social communications, design innovation and consumer insights.

DFID brings its deep expertise in designing and delivering development programmes at scale, its role as a major bilateral donor and its relationships with government and other development partners.

How do we know we're getting it right?

Girl Hub measures success through tangible changes in the lives of adolescent girls. We focus on areas proven to be particularly important for the girls themselves, their future children, and for wider economic and social development. We've seen extraordinarily positive results in the numbers of girls who are now able to avoid child marriage, delay their first birth, access and complete secondary school, remain safe from violence, and benefit from economic opportunities and assets around them.
